    Accessibility experience

by Sherill-Ann Monaghan, over 3 years ago

I had to go to Service Canada and line up with the many people waiting to get in. To get in with a scooter, you need to go down the long side of the building to get to the ramp. On this day the line up was way outside. We had to wait a long time in the heat. Not everyone was very patient. When it was my turn, I couldn’t get in the building because of the crowd and where I was with my scooter, and the direction the door opened. I couldn’t do it – I couldn’t get... Continue reading

    Inclusive Programming

by Professional, over 3 years ago

It would be great to offer programming time for kids/youth/adults with special needs that need a quieter environment or more time to use a facility.

Accessible ramps, automatic doors, lower lighting, quieter environments are helpful.

Offering a lower fee or free entry for a caretaker supporting an individual with special needs reduces financial barriers.

    Accessibility/Inclusivity/Equal Opportunities

by anonymous, over 3 years ago

Thank you for the most recent proposed Strategic Multi-Year Accessibility Plan for 2020-2025.

    1. Accessibility to ALL, everywhere - ramps not stairs (this shouldn't even be an issue in 2020) Accessible doors that actually work. I can't tell you how many times the automated doors are either turned off or not working.

    2. Inclusivity to all child/youth/adult community programs and rec programming from ALL business. My disabled youth/teen should be able to participate in any rec program that is offered to the community - this may require the community/business to offer adaptable programming options for those individuals.

    3. Seasonal elements... Continue reading

Accessible store fronts and proper snow removal on street & sidewalks

by Jocelyn, over 3 years ago

Most of the store fronts on the Main Street are not accessible. The town should implement the Stop The Gap campaign.

More often than not, the streets are not plowed properly during the winter for wheelchair users.Especially, when the trucks use the handicap parking spots for their snow dumping/ pile up.

All public retail should be accessible with toilets

by Bruce, over 3 years ago

Collingwood still has many stores, restaurants and services that are inaccessible to someone using a wheelchair. Many restaurants don’t have toilets that can be accessed in a wheelchair. We are very behind most first world countries like the US, Australia and even Europe now that the EC pushed an accessibility agenda. Why it will take another 5 years when it would be very easy to do faster.

    Accessible parks

by parent , over 3 years ago

It would be amazing to see more accessible parks and equipment (accessible/large swings with seatbelts/ small stairs for climbers with rails or a ramp). Many children in the community have physical challenges that prevent them from taking part in regular park activities, like swings/climbers due to there being too many stairs, low sides of slides and unsafe heights out of arms reach. My kid has disabilities that require I join in any activity and if it doesn't fit the 2 of us or isn't safe for a very small child, they're unable to participate. I know sunset park is being... When there are no steps and when the doorways have an automatic button or sensor so that I can go into buildings

by Bethany12345$$$$, over 3 years ago

I’ve been living in Callingwood for most of my life just recently I’ve had to use a wheelchair to get around but even then I have had trouble with accessibility in the community some of the buildings are accessible at least to be able to get in when they have a automatic Button or the doors are censored I think Callingwood unlike a lot of other communities has a lot of accessibility some places but still needs accessibility and others like not having steps released having an option for an accessible entrance added on some of the businesses if that...
