Wilson-Sheffield Community Park & Triangle Neighborhood Park

After consulting with the local basketball community and residents, the design now includes a full-size basketball court instead of the originally planned half courts.

Working closely with user groups, we’ve redesigned the layout to provide separate, dedicated courts for tennis and pickleball.

To address concerns about sound, the pickleball courts were designed in consultation with an acoustic engineer to help mitigate pickelball noise.

Based on your feedback, the playground has been expanded and made fully accessible, featuring rubberized safety surfacing for added comfort and safety.

The parking lot was redesigned to reduce the number of stalls, creating a more balanced and community-friendly space.

The Town of Collingwood is building a new community park on the adjacent property to Admiral Collingwood Public School (along Dey Drive) called the Wilson-Sheffield Community Park.

The lands were acquired through the development of the Indigo Estates for the creation of park space within the subdivision. The overall growth of Collingwood has led to a need for amenities and the Indigo Estates opportunity meets the criteria that will serve a community park well.

The Town’s Community Based Strategic Plan and the Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan identify a need to provide facilities for pickleball, tennis and basketball, while a community park designation indicates a need for permanent washrooms, car parking, trail connectivity, and playground structures.

A Staff Report entitled “PRC2021-06 Herbert Wilson Legacy” was approved by Council in 2021 to name the park after the Wilson and Sheffield families for their contributions to the history of Collingwood. Both families represent a deep-rooted legacy that pre-dates the era of the Underground Railroad and have been a significant example of resiliency and accomplishment within our community.

Triangle Park is a neighborhood park and is the newest park that has also been identified as a need/gap within the Pretty River Estates subdivision. Triangle Park is adjacent to the Hamilton Drain Trail (via bridge) near southwest corner of Kirby Avenue and between the Indigo Estates and Pretty River Estates subdivisions. This was a unique opportunity to enhance the Indigo neighborhood offering as well as help fill a gap in Pretty River Estates. We have currently named this Triangle Park as a working title due to the triangular shape of the property owned by the Town.

Staff had identified the orphaned triangle parcel of land adjacent to New Life Church some years ago and were considering how it might be possible to implement a solution that would address no playground space within the Pretty River Estates subdivision. With the “radius of walkability” consideration, there was further reason to consider the Triangle property as a solution to both Indigo and Pretty River Estates.

Summer 2026: Work is currently focused on preparing and completing the new sport courts, including basketball, tennis, and pickleball areas. The playground has also been installed; however, it remains fenced off while construction continues, as the site is still an active construction area and cannot yet be opened to the public. Crews will continue working on additional park features, including the washroom building, pathways, parking areas, and landscaping.

Spring 2026: Construction on the washroom building will begin. Crews will also shift to building the sport courts, installing the playground, completing the parking lot, and adding trails, pathways, and landscaping.

• Construction Start Date- September 2025

• The construction tender for Wilson Sheffield Community Park and the washroom building is currently open and will close on May 21, 2025.

• Site Plan Approval Process through the Town’s Planning Department, including completion of required studies such as traffic and functional servicing. (April to December 2024)

• Wilson-Sheffield/ Triangle Park Development Update- March 18th Council Meeting: Consultants gave a park development update on Wilson-Sheffield & Triangle Park (Pretty River Estates neighborhood park) at the Monday March 18th Council meeting.

• Neighborhood Engagement Session: On July 27th, 2023 a neighborhood engagement session was held in the Kirby Street Cul-de-sac to discuss the playground and play space within Wilson-Sheffield Park with the surroundings neighbors. Public feedback is being collected until August 17th at 4:30 p.m. 

• Collecting Public Feedback: The Town of Collingwood is collecting feedback from the public on the design of the park. Feedback is being collected until Thursday April 6th at 4:30 p.m. 

• Public Engagement Session & Open House: A public information session and open house was held on Thursday March 9th at 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Collingwood Leisure Time Club.

• Consultation with Stakeholders: The project team met with the stakeholders from the Georgian Triangle Pickleball Association and the Collingwood Tennis Club to review the proposed concept drawings.
