About the Sixth Street Reconstruction Project
This generational infrastructure project was initiated to address critical water system needs while supporting responsible, long-term asset management planning. As part of our commitment to maintaining reliable municipal services, we are renewing aging and undersized infrastructure and upgrading it to meet current design guidelines and industry best practices.
At its core, this project will replace the existing deteriorated and undersized watermain distribution system, including hydrants and individual services to the property line, and install a new transmission water main to improve water supply and pressure to the west side of Collingwood. In addition, aged sanitary and storm sewers will be replaced, along with sanitary services to the property line, ensuring the long-term reliability of essential underground services.
Beyond critical infrastructure renewal, this project represents a transformational investment in the street's future. The new cross-section will look significantly different, prioritizing active transportation and encouraging walking and cycling as preferred and safe modes of travel. Improvements will include full road reconstruction with new concrete curb and gutter, the addition of one-way cycle tracks on both sides of the road, maintenance of the existing sidewalk on the north side, and reinstatement of all disturbed areas to previous or better condition.
By enhancing safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike, this project strengthens the community’s network of walkable, bikeable, and accessible routes, creating a safer, more connected street for generations to come.
Current Project Status
Detailed design is complete, and the project has been tendered and awarded to Trisan Construction. Utility relocations are currently underway and are scheduled for completion in April 2026, ahead of construction start. To avoid the migratory bird nesting season in the spring, the existing trees will be removed in April 2026, with some new trees anticipated to be planted as early as fall 2026.
Phase 1 of construction is outlined in the map on the right side of this page and spans Sixth Street from Oak to Hurontario Streets, and Hurontario Street from Hume to Sixth Streets, and is anticipated to begin in spring 2026. Projects updates are shared further down this page.
Tree Removal
As this project advances, the Town must remove 39 trees (36 Town-owned and 3 potentially shared ownership) to accommodate the infrastructure improvements and design. Additional trees may be required to be removed, but every effort will be made to save as many trees as possible.
Tree Replacement Plan
Council directed staff to plant trees at a minimum 3:1 replacement ratio, meaning 39 required removals will result in 120 new trees being planted. The replacement strategy focuses on “right tree, right place.” That means we’re not just planting more trees; we’re planting the right species in locations where they have enough space to grow, won’t conflict with infrastructure or utilities, and can thrive long-term. We’re also increasing species diversity, including native species, and selecting trees that are more resilient to climate change and urban stress. The goal is to have a healthier, more sustainable urban forest over time, not just replacing numbers, but improving overall canopy quality and resilience.
