The 2022 Municipal and School Board Elections will take place on October 24, 2022 across the Province of Ontario. 

Internet Voting: Electors will be able to cast a ballot anytime, anywhere between October 8 at 10:00 a.m. thru to October 24, 2022 at 8:00 p.m. Further information on how to vote online will be provided closer to the election.

In-person voting will take place on Election Day (October 24, 2022) and on select advance voting dates at the Collingwood Public Library, 55 Ste. Marie Street, Collingwood.

October 8 from 10:00am to 3:00pm
October 12 from 3:00pm to 8:00pm
October 15 from 10:00am to 3:00pm
October 19 from 13:00pm to 8:00pm
October 22 from 10:00am to 3:00pm

October24, 2022 from 10:00am to 8:00pm

The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) produces the preliminary voter roll for municipal elections that is available in the summer of 2022.

Following a period of public consultation, Council selected a combination of internet voting and in-person voting with ballots counted by electronic tabulator for their method of voting during the 2022 election.

You are eligible to vote in the election for municipal council if you meet all of the following requirements:

• you are a Canadian citizen;
• you are aged 18 or older;
• you qualify to vote in the municipality by meeting one of the three requirements:
  • As a resident elector if you live in Collingwood. You may own, rent, live in shared accommodation where you do not pay rent, or live in Collingwood but do not have a fixed address. 
  • As a non-resident elector if you own or rent property in Collingwood, but it’s not the one where you live on a full-time bases. You can only be a resident elector in 1 municipality. However, you can be a non-resident elector in any other municipality (or municipalities) where you own or rent property.
  • As the spouse of a non-resident elector if your spouse owns or rents property in Collingwood other than the one where you live.

Who is not eligible to vote in a municipal elections? 

• A person who is serving a sentence of imprisonment in a penal or correctional institution.
• A corporation.
• A person acting as executor or trustee or in any other representative capacity, except as a voting proxy in accordance with section 44 of the Municipal Elections Act.
• A person who was convicted of the corrupt practice described in subsection 90(3) of the Municipal Elections Act, if voting day in the current election is less than five years after voting day in the election in respect of which he or she was convicted.

Every person is qualified to be elected or hold office for the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Councillor or School Board Trustee, if on the day the nomination paper is filed, the person is:

• at least 18 years of age
• a Canadian citizen
• a resident of Collingwood, or an owner or tenant of land in Collingwood, or the spouse of an owner or tenant
• not legally prohibited from voting
• not disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office
• entitled to be an elector within the Town of Collingwood

Employees of the Town of Collingwood or its local boards who wish to run for office must take an unpaid leave of absence as of the day the employee is nominated and ending on voting day, before submitting the nomination paper. Employees must provide a copy of the documentation showing this leave of absence and effective date are complete, and must resign their position if elected. This does not apply to volunteer firefighters. 

Election Signs for the 2022 Municipal and School Board Elections, 2022 Ontario General Election and all other elections may be displayed up to 60 days prior to election day (August 25, 2022 for the 2022 Municipal and School Board Elections). Signs must be removed within 72 hours after the day of the Election.

Election Signs may be displayed on private property or on certain locations on public property as set out in By-law No. 2018-024 Election Sign By-law. For further information you can review our Election Sign Quick Guide.

Q: Can you email me a voter in Information letter? Christine kruczynski asked.

Voter Information Letters (VILs) were mailed to all registered electors in September. If you have not received one, you may register to vote in the upcoming municipal election in one of the following ways:

• online at collingwood.ca/voterlookup2022
• in person at Town Hall (97 Hurontario St.) during regular business hours (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday)
• during one of the advance polling dates (Wednesday evenings and Saturday during the day through the month of October) or on election day (Monday, October 24th). 

You will need to provide a piece of ID showing your name and a qualifying address such as a Driver’s Licence, Ontario ID card, registered mail or similar.

If you provide an email during the online registration process, VILs may be emailed to you rather than have to be collected from Town Hall or an advance voting place.

Q: Did the town send out voter registration cards, if so, I did not receive one. We are on the voters list, but I am wondering how we would vote online. My understanding is I need a pin number or QR code. SCC asked.

The website for internet voting is www.intvoting.com/collingwood. You will require your Voter Information Letter (VIL) which was mailed to all eligible electors in September to login. 

You may also vote in-person at the Collingwood Public Library on Wednesday evenings, Saturday during the day and on Election Day (October 24th). 

Q: How do I vote prior to September 30? I will be out of the country. Robert asked.

The voting period for the 2022 Municipal and School Board Election runs from October 8 - 24, 2022. Voting outside of this period is not permitted. However, you may vote any time over the internet during the voting period from anywhere in the world. Further information and login details for internet voting can be found on your Voter Information Letter (VIL) which will be mailed to you in late September or early October. If you have not received your VIL or will be unable to collect it prior to the close of polls, please contact the Town of Collingwood Election Team at Town Hall (97 Hurontario St., Collingwood) and we can issue you a replacement VIL by email.

Q: Are you REQUIRED to register in advance to vote in the Municipal Election? I understand how to see if you are registered, but people are confused about whether or not you have to register as a first step before you can vote. People without access to computers are particularly concerned because they cannot check if they are registered. NatalieB asked.

Eligible electors are required to register to vote, but there is no requirement to register in advance of election day. If you are a resident, owner or tenant of property in Collingwood, a Canadian citizen and 18 years of age or older on election day, you can vote. Registration may be done online or in-person at a polling location during advance voting and up to the close of polls at 8:00 p.m. on October 24, 2022. All voters will need to bring ID that includes their name and proof of Collingwood address such as a driver's licence, Ontario ID card, registered mail, or similar.
