The Town has an opportunity to purchase the federal building at 44 Hurontario Street, which is currently occupied by Service Canada, and is seeking community input on how this landmark property could be reimagined and contribute to the continued vitality of downtown Collingwood.
Residents, businesses, community organizations, and stakeholders are invited to participate in an open brainstorming process and share ideas for how this landmark property could serve the community in the years ahead. The Town welcomes a broad range of suggestions, from practical and achievable concepts to innovative and creative ideas, while remaining committed to preserving the building’s historical character and significance.
Potential future uses could include community spaces, non-profit and government services, municipal programs, local business opportunities, cultural and creative programming, and other uses that align with community needs and Town priorities. While the building was previously assessed for use as a dedicated arts centre and determined to be unsuitable due to structural, site, and parking constraints, arts and culture-related ideas remain welcome as part of the visioning process.
Community feedback will help inform Council’s consideration of the purchase opportunity and contribute to the development of a community-informed vision for the property. Public input will be reviewed alongside financial, technical, operational, regulatory, and engineering information gathered through the Town’s due diligence process.
If the purchase proceeds, future uses would be implemented over time, with potential interim uses considered while Service Canada continues to occupy part of the building. The visioning process will be guided by established project principles, the Town’s strategic priorities, and the Downtown Master Plan.
This engagement represents a unique opportunity for the community to help shape the future of one of Collingwood’s most recognizable historic buildings and ensure it continues to contribute to a vibrant downtown for generations to come.
